Journey Beyond Borders

In March 2026, ServLife’s school in Marocha, a village in northeast India, organized two educational outings for its students. The school provides education for 187 children from rural and economically challenged families in and around the Katihar district. Due to financial constraints, many of these families cannot afford to send their children on trips outside their village, making these outings the first time many students have traveled beyond their local community.

To accommodate different age groups, the school arranged a local park picnic for the younger children, which focused on group games, social development, and a shared meal.

For the older students, the school organized an educational tour to the city of Siliguri. The primary destination was Science City, a facility operated by the National Council of Science Museums. Students engaged with practical learning exhibits, including a planetarium, a nature interpretation center, the Heart Beat Drum, and the Square Wheel. Following the museum, the students visited City Centre Mall to experience a modern urban environment.

For all the older children, this was their first time leaving Katihar and the state of Bihar, and for a few, it was their first experience traveling by bus.

“I was very excited to visit Science City,” said student Sugandha. “I learned many new things and enjoyed with my friends. It was the best day for me.”

The trip provided practical learning experiences previously inaccessible to these students. According to school staff, the travel has noticeably increased the children’s confidence, curiosity, and willingness to ask questions.

Parents also recognized the value of the trip. “We never imagined our children would get such an opportunity to visit a big city like Siliguri,” one parent stated. “We are very thankful to the school for giving them such a wonderful experience.”

Moving forward, Bethel Kids School plans to integrate more activity-based learning and outdoor experiences into its academic programming.

“Our vision is to give every child opportunities they never had before,” said India Director Raja. “This trip was not just a visit, but a step towards helping them dream bigger and believe in their potential.”
