Mit and Pawn Nittaya and their family live in Ban Nai See village, a very poor fishing village in southern Thailand. Mit and his wife Pawn owned a gachang, the Thai word for floating fish farm, prior to the Tsunami. They have never had very much money, but when the Tsunami hit, they lost their entire fleet of fishing nets. As members of the Hope of Takaupa church that ServLife partnered with for most of the Tsunami relief efforts, ServLife awarded them an initial grant to rebuild their crab and fish nets. Now that they are able to catch fish again, they have dreams of expanding their fish farm to compete with many of the larger farms in the mangroves. The ServLife Hope Fund loan will put a much needed shock into their business, expanding their fish maintaining capacity from 4 large nets to more than 12, or from about 600 to 1800 kilos of fish. The money also purchased a new engine to give them a second sea worthy boat, as well as a large net for catching feed fish for the fish at the farm.
