Access to quality healthcare is a cornerstone of a child’s well-being. Especially in many parts of Asia, dental care, a crucial component of overall health, often goes unaddressed. In Nepal, for instance, a study by the United Mission to Nepal Oral Health Programme revealed that a concerning 93% of children ages 9-11 had never visited a dentist, and only 56% of schoolchildren brushed their teeth daily. Understanding this persistent challenge, ServLife has long made dental health a priority for the children in our care, ensuring access to necessary resources and annual professional check-ups.
This past April, our Children’s Home welcomed a dedicated team from Himal Dental for our annual dental program. As part of our continuous commitment to their well-being, ServLife regularly provides the children with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and all the hygienic products they need. During the visit, dentists and assistants conducted two main phases: first, thorough individual dental examinations for every child, and second, an engaging awareness program. This session focused on teaching how often to brush, the correct techniques, and personally engaging with each child to raise their awareness about their dental health.
While many of our children maintain good oral hygiene thanks to this ongoing support and education, these annual examinations are vital for identifying any specific needs that arise. This year, some children were found to require fillings or scaling, and a few needed orthodontic consultations. For the children who had been experiencing tooth pain, these check-ups provided a clear path forward for treatment, which is a significant relief. The dentists also provided valuable advice on how to proceed with additional dental care for those identified.
It was wonderful to see our children actively involved, learning and participating in their checkups. These regular dental initiatives are a key component of ServLife’s commitment to holistic development. Ensuring every child completes their examination and participates in these awareness programs helps us move forward with timely treatment and fosters healthy habits for a lifetime of brighter smiles.
