“Why don’t you pray about ways you can get involved from Indianapolis?” Chandler’s mom asked after her daughter expressed an interest to go to Nepal and participate in God’s work there. After years of prayer and a mentor’s suggestion, Chandler got involved with ServLife, where she started the process of sponsoring a child across the globe and eventually traveled to Nepal and met her sponsored child.
As Chandler perused the ServLife website, she was overwhelmed by the number of children needing sponsors. She prayed, “God you know all of these children. Give me a sign – a shirt color – something for the child you want me to care for.”
And before Chandler finished praying, God softly answered her with one word, “Sharmila.”
Sharmila? Chandler had never heard of the name Sharmila. She entered the name in the search and found only one girl that matched in the result, and promptly sponsored her.
One year later, Chandler joined the Teacher Training Trip in Nepal. As she prepared to go, Chandler asked Tim, the trip leader, about Sharmila. “Can you find out where she is in Nepal?” Chandler asked, hoping to see her – however briefly. To her surprise out of the 360 children in sponsorship, Sharmila was one of 12 girls in the Orphanage in Kathmandu where the team would be visiting.
By her second night in Kathmandu, the child whose name God had given her more than a year ago was standing in front of her. Chandler and her teacher team ate dinner and spent the next morning in worship beside Sharmila at Church. Chandler and Sharmila’s older sister Salome, swapped stories about praying for sponsorship.
“That’s crazy that you heard her name,” said Salome. “Out of all the girls, she is the gentle one. When all the girls in the orphanage are playing, Sharmila is always praying.” While Chandler was in Indianapolis asking God for a name, Sharmila was in Kathmandu asking God for a sponsor.
Dozens of other boys and girls in Nepal are praying for someone to sponsor them. Click here to sponsor a child today!
